The Shrine of Our Lady of the Angel

The Shrine of Our Lady of the Angel

Do not miss the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Angel, the beautiful Church of Caorle facing the sea. Legend has it that some fishermen saw a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary floating on the waters of the sea: this was supported by a very heavy block of marble and all the fishermen’s efforts to bring it to shore were in vain. Only a group of children with the innocent and gentle touch of their hands was able to do so; following this prodigious event, the islanders decided to dedicate the church also to the Blessed Virgin: hence the name of Our Lady of the Angel.

The sanctuary was the protagonist of another miraculous event: in 1727 Caorle was hit by a terrible flood, but the church remained unharmed; this event is still commemorated by two crosses on either side of the marble portal, which indicate the level reached by the seawater.
